KiwiRail's ex-CIO Ed Overy was tasked by the CEO with transforming the PMO function to reduce costs and improve the delivery of outcomes, especially around IT delivery.
Transitioning from a very traditional model to a partner led model for delivering PMO services to the business was a significant change, and one that quickly delivered transformational results for the PMO and for KiwiRail.
The two distinct benefits of LPS's collaborative PMO that KiwiRail saw as a result of using LPS were:
- Cost: Project delivery costs have been reduced by a third.
- Capability: The KiwiRail PMO saw a substantial lift in consistency, quality and capability due to LPS. This uplift was seen across personalities, capabilities and individuals. Where there were difficulties with individuals or with team structure, LPS was able to cope with these and deal with them quickly - something you wouldn’t normally be able to do in-house.
